ISOC Ghana Organises Successful Online Safety Outreach for Girls at Breman Asikuma

The Internet Society Ghana Chapter successfully organised an online safety outreach for girls in Breman Asikuma, Central Region, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, Midwife Safia, and Heritage Christian University. The outreach brought together 2,986 girls drawn from public and private schools across the district, with over 300 girls receiving one-on-one practical engagement and training.

The programme was designed to equip young girls with practical knowledge for safer, healthier, and more responsible use of the Internet. The training focused on three key thematic areas: screen time and mental well-being, the safe and informed use of apps for tracking menstrual flow, and essential online safety practices. Participants were guided on how excessive screen time can affect sleep, concentration, emotional well-being, and academic performance. They were also introduced to practical ways of managing digital habits responsibly.

A key part of the outreach addressed the use of menstrual tracking apps. The girls were sensitised on the benefits of such apps, while also being encouraged to protect their privacy, understand app permissions, avoid oversharing sensitive personal data, and seek guidance from trusted adults or health professionals when necessary.

The online safety session further covered practical issues such as password protection, suspicious links, cyberbullying, online harassment, privacy settings, misinformation, and safe reporting practices. The aim was to help girls recognise online risks early, protect their digital identities, and confidently seek support when they encounter harmful online behaviour.

The event also brought together important stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Gender, Ghana Health Service, SSNIT, Queen Mothers, education leaders, health professionals, and community stakeholders. Their participation highlighted the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach to protecting young people online and promoting digital wellbeing.

ISOC Ghana expresses sincere appreciation to the Ghana Education Service, Midwife Safia, Heritage Christian University, participating schools, community leaders, Queen Mothers, health workers, and all stakeholders who supported the outreach. The success of the Breman Asikuma engagement reinforces ISOC Ghana’s commitment to building a safer, more inclusive, and trusted Internet for young people, especially girls.
