Project Summary

The technological gap between the developed and developing countries continues to widen; some of the prevailing attributes contributing to the digital divide are poor infrastructure, resources, and high cost in internet accessibility. These deficiencies tend to directly impact digital literacy. Therefore, its adoption and utilization in low-resource communities in rural- Ghana have a major impact. The concept of digital literacy has been a challenging issue for African countries, and Ghana is no exception. Despite the government of Ghana’s effort to encourage ICT education across the country, more needs to be done. The educational sector, particularly in rural communities and parts of the semi-urban areas. Lack of ICT education due to infrastructural and capital deficits in resources step by step making efforts in ICT education, workshops, seminars and other media and visitations.

This Literacy project by the Internet Society (Ghana) chapter seeks to change this educational deficit by selecting an urban junior high school as a pilot project. Our program has done a survey and in our findings, the school needs to be equipped with computers, printers, projectors, and educational software to enable teachers and students to engage. The other aspect of the program is to train graduates to become instructors in cybersecurity and other areas of study in the technology field.

Objective of the Project

After meeting with some community leaders and inspecting some schools our findings obligate us to help repair some classrooms to better accommodate any equipment and teaching materials they may use in educating its students. Our objective is to emulate the pilot program in the urban community we selected but, we will have subsequent programs in other communities. Reaching out to most rural and urban community schools that do not have the needed resources to educate their people in technology. This project seeks to identify a school or community and then provide them with digital skills, training and equip them with ICT Labs. This will enhance the teacher’s approach in teaching and for the students to have an interest in the subject. Precisely, the project seeks to achieve the following objectives;

1. Help some seniors who recently graduated to train and demonstrate an understanding of the concept of the Internet to best teach the student.

2. For the students to learn with the needed equipment and have the best education in technology.

3.Equip marginalized schools or communities with an ICT computer lab to improve their education in technology.
